Efforts to Control
Land Subsidence

Causes of land subsidence include brine pumping, groundwater extraction, natural consolidation of layer, and crustal movement.
We are tackling various challenges related to preventing land subsidence in order to achieve harmony with the environment and coexistence with the local community.

❶ Agreement on land
subsidence prevention

In order to prevent land subsidence caused by natural gas extraction, Chiba Prefecture and natural gas extraction companies have concluded an “Agreement on Prevention of Land Subsidence” and a “Detailed Agreement on Prevention of Land Subsidence,” which stipulates a limit on the amount of surface water discharge every five years.
The detailed agreement is revised every five years, and a new detailed agreement for five years from January 2021 was concluded on December 24, 2020.

❷Joint research

Since the control of land subsidence is a common issue for the entire natural gas development industry, we are conducting joint research within the industry (Keiyo Natural Gas Council). Specifically, we are working on themes such as monitoring land subsidence using satellites and performing land subsidence prediction calculations associated with natural gas and brine development. Furthermore, we are conducting joint research with Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) and universities.

Promotion of Energy Conservation

To promote appropriate energy conservation activities, we have established the Energy Conservation Promotion Committee, and the Energy Conservation Management Committee consisting of representatives from each department as a subordinate organization, to formulate and implement energy conservation measures.
The average intensity for the five fiscal years from April 2020 to March 2021 was 99% or less, which was classified in Class S, that is, the best class, according to the evaluation system of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. For example, in the verification of the “Improvement of gas delivery methods,” we confirmed that the relocation and decommissioning of equipment related to gas transmission had resulted in energy savings almost in line with the plan (reduced electricity consumption by approx. 900,000 kWh/year)
In addition, in consideration of annual fluctuations in production and power consumption, we have improved the graphs of intensity trends at each plant so that the aggregate results can be compared with the same month in the past.

Industrial Waste Management

In October 2020, we introduced the electronic manifest system for outsourcing industrial waste disposal. By digitizing manifests, the three parties involved in emission, collection, and disposal can always view and monitor the latest information, thereby preventing inappropriate manifest registration and reporting.
In addition, centrally managing waste generated from various parts of the company has enabled us to share information.
Compared to conventional paper manifests, not only has the clerical work become much more efficient, but also human errors such as omissions and incorrect entries have been reduced.

Iodine Recycling Initiatives

Iodine is a valuable resource. If iodine, which is collected and disposed of as "industrial waste," can be reused, an environmentally friendly recycling system can be created.
As a natural resource, iodine reserves are limited and need to be effectively utilized. Spent iodine in the pharmaceutical and medical fields, in the chemical industry, in electronic components, and in many other applications can be reused.

Our company is working on the recovery business of used iodine and recycling of valuable iodine to meet economic and environmental requirements and to make effective use of resources through comprehensive recovery technologies based on our unique know-how.
